Work Overview

Composed originally in 1998 in my Conservatorium days, this work was originally for Tuba solo. The work, in one short movement, is cast in the form of a cortege with sections of march-like austerity contrasting with sections of relative freedom commenting on the ritualistic material. The work rises to a dramatic climax before ending with hazy multiphonics.

I have recast it for the remarkable Euphonium playing of Dr Matthew van Emmerik, in part as thanks for the two wonderful performances of Johann de Meij's UFO Concerto in September 2016. In this new version, I have tried to highlight the Euphonium's impressive range and expressivity.
