This work is easily playable by a good youth orchestra. It explores the feelings of going to the beach - the drive, the anticipation of a good surf, anticipating a great day out, and also the feelings of being in the surf - a good ride on your board, the turbulence of diving under the sets, and also just lying on the sand. The Coda suggests a change in conditions - like a southerly rolling in or the north east chop. It's language is tonal, and the orchestration is classic Rimsky Korsakov and Respighi, with a hint of Michael Torke, so it comes together in rehearsal pretty quickly.
Instrumentation: 2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, timpani, percussion (2 players), piano or harp, strings.
Duration: 7 min.
The composer notes the following influences on this work: Respighi, Torke.
- In the form/style of: Overtures
