only the ocean knows is a meditation on the murky depths of the ocean, setting a shakuhachi soloist in a dialogue with the ensemble. It was inspired by the discovery of the HMAS Sydney off the Northwest coast of my native Western Australia. The Sydney sank after a battle in World War II, during which all 645 crewmembers were lost. It took 66 years to discover the location of the wreck.
Instrumentation: Shakuhachi 2.1 (on B), bass clarinet in B flat, harp, percussion 1 (vibraphone, crotales), percussion 2 (suspended cymbal, gong, bass drum (laid flat), wine glass on F#), percussion 3 (marimba, vibraphone), cello.
Duration: 12 min.
