Work Overview

This is a bright tempo composition featruing semiquaver motifs. Essentially it is a melody over a repeated piano and double bass figure, and drums are accompanying and occasionally playing accents together with the piano. The composition is designed to feature improvisations over the form of the tune, but can also function perfectly well without this.

Work Details

Year: 1998

Instrumentation: Soprano saxophone, piano, bass (double or electric), drums (can also be piano trio).

Duration: 5 min.

Difficulty: Medium — melody requires clear articulation, constant semiquaver syncopation, metric modulation

Written for: Alister Spence Trio

First performance: by Alister Spence, Lloyd Swanton, Toby Hall — 2000. Sony Music Studios

The composer has noted the following styles, genres, influences, etc:
The piece is in an even semiquaver 'latin' jazz style written intially for piano trio reflecting an interest in the work of e.g. Sonny Rollins and Kenny Garrett and to some extent Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim). Other pieces I have written that demonstrate these influences are: 'Bright Starlight' and 'Samba Nova'.

Released on the album 'Three Is A Circle' in Australia on Rufus Records in 2000, and on Earth Spirit Records in Japan in 200.

"It would be no exaggeration to say that he, Spence, is fully rivaling the pianists who have brought about the present boom in piano trio music." Swing Journal (Japan), November 2003.
