Work Overview
This piece is an intense essay in contrasts. On the one hand its opening is very dark and even obsessive in character (symbolised by the opening key of A flat minor), while on the other this is balanced by sections that are very delicate and ethereal (symbolised by the shift to C sharp major). Following a powerful climax, the music winds down to silence in a coda dominated by measured tremolo harmonics on the viola.
