Work Overview

This work may be viewed as a hybrid of sonata and variation forms in that it subdivides its three movement structure (fast-slow-fast) into smaller sections comprising a total of 26 variations. The title refers to the way in which the variation process not only varies the original thematic motifs, but transforms it from small fragments to broader, more expressive musical phrases. The work is dedicated to the composer's then piano student Michael Fowler.
