Work Overview
The purpose of this work is to provide viola players with a substantial virtuosic piece in which most technical aspects of the instrument are pushed to the limit. As the subtitle suggests, another title for the work could be "Three Portraits," although the overall structure does adhere loosely to a basic sonata shape, with the sonata form movement shifted to the finale, the second movement being a large ternary shape and the first movement being a free fantasy. With this in mind, each of the movements may be performed individually, although the progression in mood from grand soliloquising through reflective introspection to nervous enthusiasm will be missed.
