Work Overview
Responsories is a two-movement piano quartet exploring
the various ways an individual may respond to a group. The first
movement sets the three strings in a constantly overlapping
argument over the 'correct' way the material is to be played. The
piano acts as an 'interpreter', extending the strings' thoughts
into extremes of rhythm and register. The fast, densely woven
lines hover on a knife-edge of gestural order and chaos.
The dreamlike, hallucinogenic progress of the second movement
Adagio is a response to, and the textural inverse of the
hard-edged first movement. Here, a pre-recorded viola d'amore is
the individual and the live piano quartet the group interpreting,
disagreeing with and occasionally attempting to fuse with the
electronic part.
