Work Overview
The title refers to an early invention by Robert Fludd in 1600 of a mechanical musical instrument consisting of a fretted board attached with quills that descended slowly through the strings of a horizontally-placed, trapeze-shaped lyre. The speed of descent was checked by means of gradually unwinding / winding multiple spools, thereby setting off quills into contact with the corresponding strings. The title acknowledges the evolution of the harpsichord from its early, more primitive form - that of a mechanical psaltery. The work is written for a five-octave, two-manualed harpsichord with 8' on both manuals and 4' in the lower manual. The instrument should be amplified for performance.
