Here I stand, the keeper of the inn / A.J. Anderson.

Work Overview
This anthem was inspired by a sermon by the Rev'd Dr Ian Hunter, preached at midnight on Christmas Eve, 2012, in Trinity College Chapel, Melbourne. Its text commences as a seemingly conventional reflection on the story of the innkeeper at Bethlehem. It is well suited as a carol to follow the sixth lesson (Luke 2:1-7) in a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
The opening theme of the anthem is derived from the recitative "Siehe, ich stehe vor der Tür und klopfe an" ("Behold, I stand at the door and knock") from Bach's Advent cantata BWV 61, and the harmonic language - and, indeed, both the musical and poetic structure - appropriately echoes Herbert Howell's carol-anthem "Here is the Little Door".
