Work Overview

In 2016 I accepted a commission from 4MBS FM Radio to write a short Overture for their Brisbane Shakespeare Festival Play Readings of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I enjoyed writing the Overture, scored for String Quartet and Percussion with the addition of the solo piano piece I've titled Enter the Dream, which was a comment on some of the colourful characters in the play. I chose to write in a simple style, not of the actual period of the play, but with a melodic, rhythmic and tonal structure which I matched with various characters.
Simplicity and communication were important considerations as well as drama and heightened,
well-contrasted dynamics. In this way I hoped to 'enter the dream' myself and to invite performers and listeners to do so as well. It was a pleasure to take part in this 4MBS FM project, which in 2016 celebrated its tenth anniversary of an imaginative contribution to the arts in Queensland.
