Work Overview

The Last Flight of Saint-Ex was inspired by the famous French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944), also known as Saint-Ex - author of the international bestseller Le Petit Prince - whose plane was shot down by a young German pilot in 1944 in the South of France. It was originally composed for oboe and string quartet for the Sydney Symphony Fellows in 2008 and later arranged in 2010 for a saxophone quartet CD-ROM project. The fast, pulsating, driving motion of the work depicts the planes flying erratically through the air trying to escape the enemy. Saxophone extended techniques, such as multiphonics, slap-tongue and flutter-tongue effects imitate the triple stops, pizzicato and tremolo string effects of the original version. In the slow middle section, a feeling of sadness, pathos and grief is conveyed by a haunting cello or baritone saxophone solo. The feeling of urgency, danger, panic and unrest soon returns in the final section, with more complex syncopated rhythms, irregular metres and erratic dynamic changes.
