This single movement work is a rhapsodic exploration of the lyrical power of the soprano sax within a contemporary idiom. The title suggests an interplay of light and dark and this is apparent in the glittering highs and gloomy depths of this piece.
Instrumentation: Soprano saxophone, flute (doubling alto flute, piccolo), clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), tenor saxophone (doubling soprano saxophone), trumpet, horn, tenor trombone, piano (doubling celeste), percussion (vibraphone, glockenspiel), 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass.
Duration: 12 min.
Difficulty: Medium — Requires very good control, though not technically difficult.
Commission note: Commissioned by the Festival of Perth.
