Work Overview
This version of Ca' the Yowes, for instrumental sextet, is a textless arrangement of a version for baritone and piano of the well-known song by Robert Burns. The original song version was written for the composer's father, John Rae, in 1986. It takes the original, traditional melody and sets the verses to a pattern of upwards transpositions that gradually raise the vocal tessitura from a low register to a very high, ethereal register. The new version was composed especially for a concert, conducted by the composer, which combined the Folksongs by Luciano Berio with the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen by Gustav Mahler.
