Work Overview
Stillness Within is the portrayal of a sense of calm and inner peace. Much inspiration has come from the interaction between jazz trumpeter Miles Davis and jazz pianist Red Garland on a recording of the Rodgers and Hart jazz standard, My Funny Valentine, by the Miles Davis Quintet of 1956. The influence of the piano playing of Bill Evans is also quite evident here, as well as the reference to his "Peace Piece" vamp from 1958.
After the 4-bar introduction, the main themes in 4/4 time are stated in the keys of C minor and Eb major. The piano interlude establishes the new time signature of 12/8 and key change to F major. A variation chorus follows before the return of the second theme in Eb major.
Stillness Within was first performed and recorded in November 2003 by a 10-piece chamber ensemble at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. An arrangement for flute and harp was performed by Paul Dhasmana (flute) and Owen Torr (harp) in July 2006. An arrangement for flute and piano was performed by Paul Dhasmana (flute) and Nadia Burgess (piano) in November 2005 and has been revised in 2026.
