This odd couple fit well together under the title 'Dark Scenarios' since within each there is a story line with elements of the burlesque, irony and even menace. In 'Cortege' an unrelenting ostinato bass in the outer sections is relieved by a change of mood. In 'Ballroom Nightmare' a banal waltz tune morphs into nightmarish parody of the waltz.
Instrumentation: Piano 4 hands.
Duration: 14 min.
Contents note: Cortege (march) -- Ballroom Nightmare (waltz).
The composer notes the following influences on this work: Ravel - 'La Valse' Rachmaninoff - 'The Isle of the Dead' Edgar Allan Poe.
