Work Overview
The driving force of Sunburst is the gradual metrical shifting of a prevailing ostinato, an 'Amsterdam' rhythmic motif that presents initially in compound time. Structured in Rondo form, the piece intersperses passages dominated by syncopated orchestral stabs with gentler and more lyrical melodies, with the rhythmic ostinato a prevailing thread throughout all sections of the piece. Playing on ideas of consistency and anticipation, the music repeatedly builds up and out, surging forward before eventually resolving into an explosive climax.
Sunburst was originally composed for Wind Ensemble- Commissioned by the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors' Association (ABODA) SA for the 2022 SA School Band and Orchestra Festival.
This orchestral arrangement was made by the composer in 2025.
