Work Overview
The title comes from Mahler's 6th symphony. It is a gift for my friend Colin, who had stroke when he was in his 30s. The good thing about having a stroke at a young age is that you recover quickly and so today he is fine, thankfully. The piece recalls a memorable concert of Mahler's 6th symphony that Colin and I had attended. We talked about how there were so many beautiful moments that were fleeting - touched on and then gone - as if Mahler found utter beauty only bearable in small doses. I finished this piece in between visits to Colin in hospital. There was no stronger reminder that we should celebrate the beautiful moments in case they are fleeting. I wrote a string quartet where these short but ravishing moments of Mahler's Andante Moderato, so brief in their original guise, are fulfilled.
