Kingfisher dances : a suite for Tyalgum / Richard Charlton.
Library shelf no. 787.87/CHA 12 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
I have always been an admirer of the Kingfisher family; these little birds seem to have a real zest for life and I have tried to imbue the music with this same vitality, passion and sense of fun! The suite opens with the call of the 'Sacred Kingfisher' - a loud, clear, four note "kik, kik, kik, kik" which gives rise to much 'musical' swooping and darting to and fro! The second movement gives a resonance of misty mornings and clouds caught by the Caldera. The mountain is called 'Wollumbin', or Cloud Catcher by the aborigines. A slightly ungainly 'ballet' follows, as frogs appear in the third movement. They scramble to greet the morning sun (much activity)! In the finale birds re-appear, agitated at first, but then flying high over the valley!
