Ave Maria : for string trio
by James Cuddeford (2021)
This short five minute work for string trio is based closely upon a song I composed for solo female voice which sets the traditional Latin text of Ave Maria.
The violin here takes the vocal part and presents it as a kind of Song without words. In the compositional background there are melodic and phrasal echos of both Schubert and late Beethoven; the listener may perhaps hear these models emerging to the foreground more clearly than in most other works of mine. The work is dedicated to the memory of my father.
Instrumentation: Violin, viola, cello.
Duration: 5 min.
Dedication note: Dedicated to the memory of my father
