Work Overview

Mountain is inspired by kunanyi/Mount Wellington, a landmark in the Tasmanian capital of Hobart. The piece is in three movements - slow, fast, slow - which evoke different aspects of what many locals refer to simply as "the mountain".

Before starting this piece, I sought stories about kunanyi from the community and was struck by how the mountain is both private and communal. On the one hand, it is shared: a constant presence in the background of our daily lives. On the other, it is private: the setting for many moments of personal significance. My piece attempts to capture both.

In 'Dawn', the ensemble ascends like the morning sun, incorporating material drawn from the calls of honeyeaters that inhabit the mountain. 'On the Pipeline Trail' imagines a day of childhood adventure, as recounted to me by a member of the community. 'Tarn with Bubbles (and Organ Pipes in the Background)' suggests a glistening mountain lake, the iconic "organ pipes" rock formation towering behind.
