Shifting : for violin, clarinet and piano / Melissa Douglas.
Library shelf no. 785.2413/DOU 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Shifting musically reflects the vast range of Alezander Calder's unique artworks, from the fragile simplicity and fine craft of his suspended mobile sculptures, to the mystery and striking presence of Calder's "stabiles": large, fixed sculptures constructed with sheet metal.
The violin, clarinet and piano begin with rotating melodic fragments that rise and fall, reflecting the contour of the suspended mobiles. These ideas float, merge and dissolve, shared between the trio.
From this sparse opening, a rising melodic motif emerges, its repetitive nature evoking the hypnotic movement of the mobiles. The piano grounds the work as the ascending theme grows in intensity.
