Work Overview
Alexander the Great brought the teachings of classical Greece, in particular those of Aristotle, to the many academies that he founded on his historic journeys as he travelled south from Greece towards Egypt, and east to India. He held an unusually open mind, and he embraced the ancient cultures of Persia, India and Egypt as he discovered them along his way. In this, his journeys were unique, as he attempted to create a new cultural balance that acknowledged both the Hellenic and ancient Asian worlds.
The teachings that he introduced were Aristotelian in character. They included study of the relationship between human beings and fiery , watery, airy and earthy elements. He taught of a connection between man and the plant world from a moral perspective. The activity of the basic elements as found within the physical body was a part of the Aristotelian teachings; the earthly in human bones, the fiery and the watery in the heart and the circulation of the blood and bodily fluids, and the airy in breathing.
