Work Overview
This little piece began as a teaching aid, to put it kindly. A
lot of my students were complaining that they didn't have enough
time to finish all of their assignments by the deadlines required
in their course - including their composition folios.
I got a little tired of hearing this, as you might imagine. So I
decided to compose a new work in one day, starting at 9 am and
finishing it in time for a rehearsal at 6 pm on the same day. The
piece would be composed (and this is where I really grit my
teeth) whilst I was performing the duties of my full-time
position as Head of Composition and Production, using many of the
techniques they were taught in the first third of their degree
program.
Thankfully, the piece was ready and photocopied within 15 minutes
of the rehearsal that evening. If it hadn't been, I'm fairly sure
I would not have written the paragraph above! I'd always wanted
to set this moving poem, which we hear often recited and
occasionally sung in April or November every year here in
Australia. I had a fragment of the opening melodic line in my
head for a while, so it was a good starting point to turn it into
a piece that had be written within a very specific timeframe.
