Work Overview
I composed this work during the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis. It is written in the hope for action to raise awareness of, and to protest against, climate change. Ash combines improvising soprano saxophone soloist and jazz rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums), with an orchestra comprising 2 oboes, 2 horns and full string section. The architectonic structure of the composition is derived from mapping a series of photos from the bushfires onto score paper to determine pitch, texture and dynamic shapes. The orchestration and jazz ensembles could be adapted for orchestras with different instrumentation if needed. The composer is keen for it to be performed and welcomes enquiries from interested parties. The work could be suitable for advanced high school ensembles looking to blend jazz and classical ensembles.
