Work Overview

This work started life as a possible movement for a piano sonata. Then it became the first of four piano pieces of a very serious persuasion called Ceremonies. Subsequently it has been developed as a work for wind orchestra with performances by Third Military District Band, Newcastle Wind Orchestra, Benelong Wind and Brass.

Having elements for suitable orchestration, a version was created for concert or military band, which was submitted to the armed forces, and gained performance by the Third Military District Band, Victoria, in 1985.

Then it was performed by The NSW Youth Concert Band under Major Frank Rugers on a NSW Tour in 1986.

Thereafter, The Bennelong Wind & Brass performed a reorchestrated version in Sydney in February 1988 conducted by Robert Miller.

The present version is a further reorchestration of the Bennelong, somewhat reimagined for Newcastle Wind Orchestra.

The work begins its first section solemnly, with shifting pitch and rhythm, until settling into a mainly ¾ time with a growing linear counterpoint, finally erupting into a passionate outburst for the whole orchestra. That leads to a more melodic and flowing middle section, again in ¾, which treats a simple motif in various guises until the first section returns with a somewhat modified eruption to end the work.

The piano version can be heard on the composer's YouTube channel.
