Work Overview
Since trombones bear a resemblance to the didjeridoo of my native Australia (and indeed, many trombonists play the didj), I decided to concentrate on rhythm in this piece. The rhythms I use are similar to those of aboriginal didjeridoo music. Indeed, didj music concentrates on rhythm to the extent of limiting the notes to two fixed pitches. I have used rather more than two pitches(!), but nevertheless in some parts of the piece the rhythmic patterns dance over a grid of limited pitches.
There are two alternating sections of the piece. One is the dancing patterns I mentioned and the other is more melodic and contrapuntal.
As for the title, you may imagine a rather solemn and ritualistic dance played at night in the desert. Perhaps there will be bleached bones in the sand - although a gathering of trombones is unusual.....
