Work Overview
I was delighted to be asked to contribute to the centenary celebrations of UWA with this piece for three cellos, as I was one of the very first intake of the Music Department when it was first established. Added to that, my father and uncle were two of the first students in UWA's earliest years. Being the first, when opportunities become available, makes one feel especially lucky and privileged, and I have never lost the sense of gratitude for the encouragement I received at UWA.
A cello is a wonderfully versatile instrument, and most of my chamber music features one or two. Being asked to write for three was a blissful task! The piece has several upward sweeping curves, starting low-down and soft, with the three instruments winding around each other. There are several moments of the cellos chattering together, and other moments where they echo each other in short swift phrases. Near the end, a low pulsing note is answered by some strident chords.
