Work Overview
Branchings is a chamber/electroacoustic work consisting of 13 movements: 7 'Dreams', separated by 6 'Interludes'. Shakuhachi features in all movements, often played simultaneously by one performer in combination with live-electronics, synthesizer, theremin or Continuumini. In other movements, shakuhachi (with or without live-electronics, all one performer) is paired with synthesizers, theremin, COntinuuMini and/or live-electronics played by a second performer. (In the recorded version, Jim Franklin took the role of both performers, using multitrack techniques.)
The shakuhachi material is related to, but not copied from, shakuhachi honkyoku.
