This set of pieces, commissioned by Melbourne Fringe festival, responds to the space at Auction Rooms in two ways: the most essential part of a cafe - the coffee, and the ambient sound that fills such a space. The idea of listening on smart devices/personal listening devices reflects the fairly obvious observation that a huge amount of people do this anyway, so to have cafe sounds - essentially randomised in the second piece - permeating this enclosed, personal listening space, is interesting to me. Especially while trying to go about the regular activities that are undertaken in a cafe. I am also attempting to engage people in their sonic environment more actively. By drawing their attention to sounds in this space, I hope that the same increased sonic awareness carries throughout the rest of their lives; or at least the rest of their day.
Is a sonification of the data of a coffee selected by Auction Rooms, analysed by mass spectrometry. It is also a response to that data through rhythmic articulation, again using the data.
