Work Overview

This piece continues John's fascination with the intervals of a semitone and minor third. A chordal theme and a melodic fragment are developed together, to take advantage of the beguiling sonorities of all flutes, particularly the low ones. The work also continues John's interest in fusing elements of contemporary popular music within a "post-classical" sensibility. A central section features looping rhythms and some advanced playing techniques, such as overblown accents and harmonics.
