Instrumentation: Piccolo, flute, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet in B flat, bass clarinet in B flat, bassoon, contrabassoon, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B flat, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (2 players), strings.

Commission note: Commissioned by Symphony Australia for performance by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

This work may be performed as a stand-alone piece or as part of the suite Four essays on the passing of time (90 minutes circling the earth -- 4 minutes in a nuclear bunker -- Moments of falling -- 4 hours in a holding pattern).
