Work Overview

There are many time signature and rhythmic changes in this piece. If you've not played music like this before, sometimes beginning the learning process can be intimidating. I promise, it's easier than it looks! In this context, time signatures and beaming communicate extra details about how phrases are structured. To avoid mathematic overwhelm, you'll want to find where the rhythmic and melodic motifs repeat and use this to build out your understanding of the micro and macro structures. Identifying where the material repeats will assist in ease of study. Lastly, at it's core, this piece is folk music. Feel free to change phrases, dynamics and add ornamentation as you deem necessary!

The End of Torpor is a poignant flute and cello duet composed by disabled musician, The Emerald Ruby. Its wildly successful crowdfunding campaign empowered Jen to fund the recording of the piece, with cellist Naomi Dart and Videographer Midnight Crush Films, whilst ensuring fair compensation for all involved. Filmed outdoors on Awabakal land, this recording echoes the nature amongst which it was performed. Torpor is defined as the physiological changes an animal undergoes as they enter a state of hibernation. "Although I am human, every year as the sun sets earlier and the temperature cools, I experience torpor," said Jen. "This mental and physical shift marks my yearly unavoidable transition into a state of Seasonal Affective Disorder. As Winter turns to Spring, I exit this state of depression, emerging from a type of hibernation. This piece was composed in the July/August period of 2021, Winter into Spring, musically capturing the end of torpor."
