Work Overview
Dawn Songs is a five movement work based on transcribed pied butcherbird songs heard at dawn in Brisbane and Nimbin. The first movement was written for my friend and colleague Rebecca Coyle in the last days of her life. Rebecca loved birds and birdcalls, and had enjoyed some of the pieces I had written using the calls of the pied butcherbird, so I thought it was fitting to write a birdsong-based piece for her. When I emailed the autograph score to Rebecca's husband, Philip, he replied saying that the dedication was "doubly appropriate since 'Dawn' is Rebecca's second name". I had not been aware of this at the time of composition.
