Work Overview
Cabbages and Kings is a fun collision of rock, funk, and jazz, experimenting with the integration of rock vocalisations and an operatic style as a type of 'rock-opera' portmanteau. The lyrics are snippets of text taken from Lewis Carroll's nonsense books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, rearranged to form a new non-linear narrative, grouping phrases according to rhythm and theme. The piece is especially concerned with cats, bats, mice, and pigs….and, of course, cabbages and kings.
