Work Overview
These three pieces were written in the tradition
of 19th century composers, such as Robert Schumann,
Joseph Heller and Friedrich Burgmüller, who wrote collections of
small character pieces for children, in a wide variety of moods,
and with somewhat (but not always) reduced technical demands.
Abarcarolle (from the
French) was, strictly speaking, a traditional folk song
sung by Venetian
gondoliers. However,
from the 18th century, but particularly in the
19th century, classical composers began to transform
the genre from its origins in vocal folk music into purely
instrumental pieces in that style. This adaptation reached its
apotheosis in the 'Barcarolle in F sharp major' of Frederic
Chopin.
