Work Overview

Earth Hour consists of a melodic statement which develops into a quasi-improvisatory feature for the soloist before the reprise. The opening statement is similar to that of the Cello Concerto by Robert Schumann, The feeling generated is that of a light bossa nova beat with rhythmic freedom in the middle section.

Instrumentation: Solo alto saxophone, 2 flutes, oboe, cor anglais, horn in F, drum kit, violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano.

Duration: 5 min.

Difficulty: Medium — Medium technical demands, except for the solo part

The composer notes the following styles, genres, influences, etc in relation to this work:
Light ballad / bossa nova style. I have other works in comparable style for large or small jazz ensembles

This work was composed in response to a competition set by The Music Place store which has branches in Sydney and Melbourne. It was completed for Earth Hour which is held yearly on the last Saturday in March to promote responsible use of power.
