Work Overview
I have long been very enamoured of the String Quartets of Haydn, Beethoven, and Bartók, and while their styles differ enormously from each other, what seemed clear to me was that their works demonstrated the enormous range of expressive possibilities inherent in the String Quartet medium. I therefore felt, in writing Enkindling, that it would be not too unreasonable or out of the question for me to explore and give musical expression to the more incendiary side of my temperament. The fires suggested by the title may range from raging flames to smouldering embers, but they burn as forever inextinguishable.
