Work Overview

Having long admired Bach's ability to offer a balance of emotions and moods in his Suites for solo cello, I asked myself: is it possible to create a similar balance within the confines of a single movement?

This was the genesis of the piece, and it accounts for the frequent changes of tempo and incorporation of many different melodic ideas.

Reflections divides into a number of discrete sections, each one based on a specific style. The piece incorporates such diverse influences as diatonic tonality, jazz, blues, Hassidic dance, klezmer, a Bach gavotte, and a more advanced type of tonality.
