Work Overview
I wrote the Sonata during the northern season of winter in 1990, and I think that the piece has much of the spirit of winter. During the second movement in particular, I think of the texture of the sky and of the snow and ice that dominated the view I had from my studio. The first performance was given by Mirjam Ingolfsson and Ursula Ingolfsson-Fassbind in Philadelphia 7 April 1999. The Sonata is dedicated to the memory of the French mathematician Dr. André Weil, who was Professor of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1958 to 1976.
