Work Overview

The piece is scored for double bass and tabla. The tabla may be replaced by a similar instrument to be chosen at the player's discretion.

Travelling Tones is a companion piece to Settling Tones (2015) for solo double bass.

Founded on the Phrygian mode, Travelling Tones explores two harmonic centres: A and D. While the first three bars of the percussion part are strictly notated, for most of the remainder of the piece the percussionist is asked to improvise.

The bass part is fully notated throughout.
