Work Overview

While the first two movements were influenced by Beethoven, the main inspiration behind the final movement was Jewish vocal music, both sacred and secular.

The first movement is a sonata form in G minor. While the first subject is characterized by rapid exchanges of short motives between the three instruments, the second subject is more peaceful and is cast in the Aeolian mode.

The second movement is a ternary form set to a slow tempo. In the A section, the melodic narrative unfolds courtesy of the stringed instruments in alternation with the piano. The kernel of the middle section is a poignant melody played by the cello.

Founded on ternary form, the finale opens with the piano introducing a cycle of bars in the low register where the most prominent interval is a perfect fifth. The cello then gives a vivacious solo in juxtaposition with this cycle. This leads to the stringed instruments playing in octaves. In the middle section, the tempo is slowed down considerably to enable a plaintive melody from the violin. In the resumption of the A section, the violin plays the solo previously heard in the cello.
