Work Overview
Miriam Hyde wrote about this Fantasia: "The well-known tune, Waltzing Matilda, is treated freely, though there is no doubt that its identity would be apparent to even the casual, untrained listener. Its two main features are the opening repeated note figure. Once a jolly swagman, and the final arching phrase, I'll go a-waltzing Matilda with you."
Work Details
Year: 1936, this version: 1988
Instrumentation: Piano duet (1 piano, 4 hands)
Originally for theatre orchestra as part of the music for "Heritage", produced at the Tivoli Theatre, Adelaide, in S.A.'s Centenary, 1936. This served as an overture to a scene of a jolly swagman camped by a billabong -- Composer's note.
This arrangement prompted by an engagement for the composer and her daughter Christine to participate in a one-day music festival in Balmain Church, Sydney on 28 August 1988.
