Work Overview
Beyond the Wall Suite for Piano Quintet is a suite of four themes from the children's opera, Beyond the Wall, Jayakumar's practice-led PhD creative work, later performed at WAAPA in 2017. The composition brief set for this work from Chimera was for a companion piece to Schubert's Trout Quintet, and as Jayakumar was engrossed in composition of the opera score at the time, she utilised some of the opera's arias and duets as inspiration for this suite. They include i) Birdsong ii) The Birdwoman and duets iii) Mother & Lullaby and i) A Juicy Peach. This suite was subsequently performed in concert, notably at the 2017 TURA New Music Festival emerging composers evening at the Perth Town Hall, which was subsequently recorded by the ABC for broadcast on the New Waves podcast series, and for ABC Classic FM. Chimera also featured this work in their concert series in the same year.
