Work Overview
It was a real honour to be asked to compose the first music to be heard in the new Mildura Arts Centre, and for it to be played on the new Steinway by Anna Goldworthy, an artist with whom I first worked nearly 20 years ago.
This short piece begins with bell-tones sounding the gently rocking rhythm of a barcarolle - a gondola, perhaps, on the Murray - which gradually adds flowing melodies. The central section is often faster, more insistently rhythmic and contrasts the deeper regions of the instrument with stylised bird-calls. The barcarolle returns in more elaborate guise, and the piece ends with distant fading bird-calls.
