Work

... one mirror, cracked ... : for oboe and piano

by Karen Lemon (2016)

Work Overview

In composing this piece, what came out for the beginning was a con fuoco frenzy of octatonicism. However, what came out next was a placid idyll of 2-3 suspensions. Thus, I ended up with a rather two-faced work-in-progress, and needed to find some way of holding it all together. From the point of view of formal balance, I felt that the initial con fuoco music needed to return, and so, in time-honoured fashion, I simply refracted some of the placid music through the lens of the fiery. While the title of the piece resonates with this process, I confess that it in fact arrived by other means: while observing some neighbours moving house, I imagined, at the other end, the insurance assessor doing the damage inventory: "… one mirror, cracked …".
