Work Overview
A one-movement work for classical guitar and string quartet
traversing a range of moods, from calm and atmospheric to
energetic and dissonant.
I grew up on an island where the weather was often rough, so the stormy sea is an emotional and spiritual home for me. I think of times I have been at the seashore during wild weather, and then of being in the sea, slapped by waves on the surface; pulled about by the currents beneath.
In this piece, an observer, safe behind a window, or perhaps viewing a photo or painting, finds her attention grabbed by the dynamic light of a stormy sea. As she takes in the details, she is drawn into the energy of the storm-tossed sea. Imagining an enormous ocean propelling the rough action, she feels herself taken in, swallowed by and then becoming part of it: cycling energy pushing to and fro, masses of water and creatures, all in absolute delight. At the end does she emerge from the sea or merge into it?
