Work

My breath is a swallow : for erhu, marimba and artist

by Clare Maclean (2017)

Work Overview

My breath is a swallow follows the images in Kate Fagan's poem of the same name, which recur and evolve like patterns in the flight of a bird. The words paint pictures, and the music paints them again in its own medium, with musical breaths of phrase and slow harmonies, and lines of flight, of falling, sweeping, cradling, shadowing. Breath in the music is slow and ontological, or voiced in lines expressing changing colours of mountain, rain, and landscapes within.

This work was written in collaboration with Kate Fagan and artist Shen Wednesday, whose paintings, inspired by the poem and the music, were projected behind the performers at the first performance of this work.
