Work Overview

The genesis of this song is in that half-dreaming, half-waking state that comes early in the morning. I had not long before heard the PLC Armidale Senior Vocal Ensemble at a fund-raiser at the New England Regional Art Museum, and had been impressed with their control of the material they sang under the direction of their teacher Anne Phelan. At around the same time I had been looking at some volumes of Australian folk-song, so it is perhaps not surprising that the song arrived in the form it did.
As I was waking up, I heard in my head a song being sung by a small chorus. The words were indistinct, but the impression they made was strong. The tune was clear, and the harmonies quite involved. The name being sung was hard to catch- "Marvelleen" is the nearest I could come to it after waking and setting to work to transcribe the song. The hardest part has been to capture something of the flavour of the harmonies in that dream-song. The song is about loss and grief, and sets out to exploit the timbres and ranges of the voices.
