Work Overview
This is a resource designed for primary classrooms to support the introduction of clapsticks and the development of rhythmic understanding through the use of body percussion combined with percussion instruments.
For example, students engage with rhythm using a visual system of coloured dots, aligned with specific instruments or actions. Through a structured sequence of exercises and optional backing tracks, learners develop skills in pulse, coordination, listening, and ensemble performance.
Several activities also invite students to create their own rhythmic patterns using this visual approach, plus extension activities are included. The series culminates in four ensemble pieces that integrate clapsticks, body percussion, and both tuned and untuned percussion instruments.
